Faversham Town Reserves back at their new home The Howard School, v Margate Sports Reserves. Margate Sports are in Favesham’s division but this meeting is the first round of the Kent Junior Cup. Town went out at this stage last season losing a close game 4-3 v Ashford, captain Dan King was amongst the scorers that day. Faversham started with the same midfield and defence that played so well last week. Matt Bowey in goal Jordan Holliday, Nye Griffiths, Ryan McDonald and Alfie Davey. Captain Dan King, George Greenway Ellis Holliday with Freddie Allen and Reece Bedford coming in to start with big Joe Lester leading the line. With a strong bench O Neilson, L Druggan, R Clark, C Dos Santos and S Wheeler.
Town kicked off and took their time acclimatising to the wet and windy conditions. Inside 12 minutes Reece Bedford got on the end of a Margate clearance, Joe Lester picking the ball up on the halfway line his through ball was cleared by the sports defender but fell kindly to Bedford who’s shot was to strong for the Sports keeper.
Town looking to play the ball on the ground in the windy conditions. The Margate Sports Captain going into the refs book early for a foul in middle of the pitch. Bedford doubled Towns lead on 21 minutes, front man Joe Lester with a neat one two with Bedford, Bedford raced clear and gave the keeper no chance with a clinical finish.
Town now creating plenty of chances, Freddie Allen beating his marker to a header but wide of the mark.
Then just before the half time whistle, a cross field pass from Faversham captain King picked out the unmarked Lester on the right wing. Lester passed the ball into the six yard box for Bedford who completed his hat-trick with a simple tap in.
Town kicking off the second half with a 3 goal cushion but under no illusion the game was won. The last home game in the league cup, Town were 2-0 up in the first half and were pegged back within 20mins 2-2 although they went on to win. Joe Lester with great movement dropped off his marker, picked the ball up and cut inside but pulled his effort wide of the Sports goal. Sam Wheeler came on for the second half was on the end of a slick move from Town. Lester started the move laying the ball to Ellis Holliday some slick passing between Holliday and king allowed Holliday to play Wheeler in on goal but his shot was deflected wide. Town made changes and brought on Oliver Neilson, Liam Druggan and Ryan Clark. It was Lester on the score sheet next with his well deserved goal. Ryan ‘Macca’ McDonald controlled the ball deep in his own half and picked out frontman Lester with a long range pass, Lester running at pace towards goal and took one touch and made no mistake with a left foot finish.
Town now keeping possession of the ball which allowed them to play some good football. Carlos Dos Santos off the bench with a hefty tackle on the Sports midfielder, too strong a challenge for the referee who showed Dos Santos a yellow card. Sam Wheeler rising highest at a corner watched as his effort was cleared off the line by Margate. Ryan Clark using his strength and pace to get the better of his marker on the right flank. Clark put in an inviting cross for Dos Santos but it was well blocked from the Margate defender. Alfie Davey followed up on his impressive debut last week to chip a great ball into the Sports area on the toes of Clark who controlled and finished calmly for his first of the season.
Very impressive performance from Town in difficult playing conditions, another clean sheet and and five goals to see them into the next round. Matt Bowey was solid between the Town posts and the back line and played very well. The midfield worked extremely hard which in turn allowed the forwards to take advantage with some good finishes, including Bedford’s hat trick.
Man of the Match : Dan King the Town skipper won and used the ball well all game to put Margate on the back foot.
Special mention has to go to Sam Wheeler, who’s attempted over head kick is still hurting the spectators ribs ???
