Faversham Town Reserves turned their attention to the league cup Saturday v Deal Town Rangers. Although a division below Deal are flying high with 100% record in their first three league games crashing in 15 goals in the process. The Lillywhite’s boasting a strong squad for the tie lined up with Ellis Wood between the sticks for his first start of the season. The back four of Nye Griffiths Ryan McDonald David Blaikie and Brad Wragg. Starting in midfield Ellis Holliday, George Greenway and Sam Wheeler the front three comprising of Carlos dos Santo Reece Bedford and captaining the Reserves for the first time Joe Lester. Also plenty of talent on the bench club captain Dan King, vice captain Sean Mchugh, Freddie Allen, Ryan Clark and Liam Druggan. The game got underway and it was Faversham putting the early pressure on their opponents with several corners. Faverham took the lead in the 24th minute
George Greenway with a corner witch was cleared by a Deal defender Joe Lester first to react to the clearance Lester set the ball back to Greenway who this time picked out David Blaikie on the edge of the six yard box. Blaikie rising high gave the keeper no chance with a clinical header into to top right hand corner.
Town having more of the ball in the early stages but Deal showing a threat on the counter attack. Joe Lester through on goal drew a good save from the impressive Deal goalkeeper. On 39 minutes Faversham did double their lead midfielder Ellis Holliday trying to thread a through ball to his captain Lester the Deal defenders clearance rebounded off his team mate into the path of Lester who’s shot was well saved by the Deal Goalkeepr but Carlos dos Santos was first to react scoring form an acute angle. Faversham with more pressure around the Deal area Lester picking the ball up on the left hand edge of the box turned and hit a left foot curling effort destined for the top corner but another good save from the Deal stopper.
Another Faversham corner deep to the back post picked out Lester again but his headed effort was straight at the goalkeeper.
Faversham followed up on their good first half work Reece Bedford winning the ball in the Deal half played in live wire Sam Wheeler, Wheelers drive towards goal drew the keeper out Wheelers unselfish pass across the keeper set up dos Santos but unfortunately for do Santos he steered his effort wide. With all the Faversham chances to extend their lead it was Deal Town who scored next a free kick giving away by Faversham on the right flank. The cross into the Faversham area found its way to the Deal player who gave Faversham keeper Ellis Wood no chance
Deal reacted well after their goal and their tails were up within three minutes they found the equaliser.
Ryan Clark and Liam Druggan on for dos Santos and Bedford both making headway down the flanks and on the 78th minute Faversham regained the lead Druggan’s quick feet and turn of pace drew a desperate lunge from the Deal defender the referee didn’t hesitate and pointed to the spot. It was all down to captain Joe Lester to secure the win for Faversham. Lester didn’t need asking twice and fired the spot kick into the goal and Town into the next round. Town played played out the final minutes with 10 men after Brad Wragg sore red late on.
The young Lillywhites created plenty of chances a good team performance for their first win of the season. A superb header from centre half David Blaikie gave town the lead Ellis Holliday Greenway and Wheeler worked tieless in midfield. Captain Lester lead the line and the team.
Man of the match Reece Bedford attacked at every opportunity made good use of the ball picking out his team mates.
