GRIFFITHS AND BOURNE ON TARGET AS TOWN DRAW AT HOME
By David Hollingsbee
TWICE Faversham Town got their noses in front. But in the end had to settle for the draw as they stretched their unbeaten run to five matches.
This was a hard-earned point against a very good Greenwich Borough side. Greenwich spurned plenty of chances, but Town defended heroically to ensure those chances were spurned. And when Town had their chances, they took them. A performance full of guts and character which so very nearly produced a winning scoreline.
A lively start from Greenwich Borough, with Town on the back foot in the opening exchanges.
Greenwich attack from the left and move the ball into the centre just short of the area, Charlie MacDonald lobs a ball forward to release Jack Barham for a free run in on goal. Barham drags his low shot wide of the right hand post.
Another Greenwich attack and the ball is in and around the Town area. With Town struggling to clear the ball comes out to MacDonald who fires goalwards through a mass of players. Ryan Cheek clears off the line.
The Lilywhites launch their first attack after nine minutes. Renford Tenyue picks up possession on the halfway line and with the crowd urging him on from the sidelines, beats his man for pace and gets to the byline. The cross is headed out but only as far as Luke Griffiths on the edge of the area who controls and pulls a right foot shot into the bottom corner past a stationary Greenwich keeper. (1-0 after 9 minutes).
Greenwich almost hit back immediately. Ryan King-Elliot's cross from the left is met by Chinedu McKenzie. Simon Overland reacts quickly to tip it over from under the bar.
With 20 minutes gone, Tom Beere delivers a corner from the right. MacDonald connects with the header but again Overland thwarts Greenwich, getting down low to save with his left hand. Chris Barnard stationed on the line completes the clearance.
A clearance from Overland doesn't make the half way line and is picked up by Barham who drives forward and right. The cross is met by MacDonald, but flicked wide of the left hand post. Golden chance-a let off.
But on the half-hour Greenwich equalise in slightly fortuitous circumstances. Beere's free-kick from the left is met by MacKenzie. The ball hits the post and deflects off Tenyue, who is stationed on the line, and into the back of the net. (1-1 after 30 minutes).
Tenyue gets to the byline and wins Town a corner. Danny Walder takes, but the corner is cleared. The attack is recycled and the ball played for Ashley Miller by the D. Miller is crowded out by the Greenwich defence but finds Griffiths whose shot is comfortably saved by George Kamurasi in the Greenwich goal.
A quick Greenwich break led by MacKenzie who slides a ball for Barham on the edge of the area. Barham's shot curls away from the right hand post.
Greenwich attack again. This time MacKenzie, under pressure from Oliver Lee, gets a shot away. Overland makes a fine save diving low to this left.
1-1 at H-T.
A high ball into the Faversham area. Under pressure from MacKenzie, Overland spills the ball. Cheek collects the loose ball and clears Faversham's lines.
Greenwich go route one and a long ball releases Barham into the area. The shot flashes across the face of goal and out for a goal kick.
Matt Bourne concedes a free-kick in a dangerous area by the D. Town set up a 5 man wall. Beere's free-kick curling free-kick is narrowly over.
And just as in the first half, Faversham weather the early Greenwich storm and break. Walder picks up possession and sprays a ball forward for Miller. Miller finds Barnard who gets to the byline and does well to win Town a corner. Walder's corner is attacked at the near post by Cheek whose flicked header is goalbound. Kamurasi saves but only into the path of Bourne who drills a first-time shot through a sea of blue-shirted Greenwich defenders. Sweetly struck. (2-1 after 62 minutes).
A Greenwich corner from the right is forced goalwards. Somehow Barnard clears it off the line. But it's all hands to the pump as the Town defence work to clear the danger.
Barham release Travis Gregory into the area. Bourne cuts off the route to goal and makes the all important interception.
Lee offers Town some respite, bringing it out of defence exchanging passes with Miller before getting to the byline and crossing into the area. The cross is cleared. The respite is temporary.
A Greenwich free-kick from the right is met by a Greenwich head, but it flashes across the face of goal.
Greenwich equalise in the 82nd. A neat back flick from outside the area, releases Jack Samoutis into the area and the subsequent low angled shot finds the far bottom corner. Overland gets hands on it but can't keep it out. (2-2 after 82 minutes).
Town still have work to do to earn their draw.
A free-kick is played to the left and a ball from the byline travels the entire length of the Faversham goal line. Bourne turns it a away for a corner at the far post.
A final free-kick to defend from within the D. With Town setting up a wall of 5 and an additional 2 posted nearby, Samoutis' free-kick is wide of the right hand post.
A bad-tempered end sees Mark Phillips sent off for a challenge on sub Carl Rook, and at the end of the match the players have to be separated on the pitch. But a well-earned point for Faversham Town against a good Greenwich Borough side.
2-2 at F-T.
