FAVERSHAM TOWN youth were given a real ear-bashing for staying out
late the night before a key friendly.
But they responded in the best way possible by delivering a midweek
wake-up call to the club's Reserve side.
Under-18s boss Ray Turner hit the roof in the wake of his side's
3-1 defeat to Lordswood on Sunday after discovering that some of his
players had been out until the early hours.
The club's no-nonsense youth development officer left the guilty
few in no doubt that they had let both him and their team-mates down.
And they bounced back in some style on Tuesday night with a 4-3 win
over Brett Harrison's Reserves in a hastily-arranged practice match
at Salters Lane.
Harrison said: "Ray was not happy at all after the defeat to
Lordswood. He told the boys their behaviour was not acceptable and I
had my say too.
"But to be fair to them, they responded well and gave my boys a
good game on Tuesday. We hope they have learned a lesson and will do
the club proud this season."
Turner said: "It was a very disappointing performance against
Lordswood. Too many players did not prepare properly for the game
and suffered as a result.
"A lot of my players let themselves down and were told that it was
not acceptable. It was the first time I'd had to have a go at my team
and certain individuals.
"I was really disappointed because I was looking for a good follow
up performance after our game against Lewisham in which the team made
huge progress.
"To be fair, they did well against the Reserves on Tuesday but I
won't be reading too much into that. They are in no doubt about what
I expect from them - and that means sensible preparation."
On Sunday, Town went behind in the first half after a long throw-in
was flicked on straight into the goal.
Lordswood enjoyed the lion's share of possession although Hugo
Gaskin did well. He was one of the few Town players prepared to get
on the ball and pass it effectively.
Town made several changes at half-time which led to a brief
improvement, but too many times Town gave away the ball and the
visitors fired a second.
Only then did Town show glimpses of their potential and Luke
O'Regan scored from the penalty spot after a clear infringement.
Shortly after, Sam Couzins had a chip cleared off the line but a
second goal would have flattered Town and Lordwood confirmed their
superiority with a well-worked third near the close.
Town's man of the match was Jim Easter who held the side together
at the back while Adam Oxberry worked hard up front with little
support.
The youth team continue their preparations for the new season with
a trip to Herne Bay on Friday night (kick-off 7.45pm)
