RAY TURNER saw his under-strength Faversham Town youth side hammered
by highly-rated Ramsgate and revealed: This is a steep learning curve
but I'm proud of my boys.
Boss Turner said he was disappointed with the result but vowed to
work hard to make the club's debut season in the Kent Youth League a
success.
He said: "There will be no excuses just a commitment to the
Faversham public who came out to watch that the management and
players will give it everything to ensure this side fully adapts to
their new league as soon as possible.
"There were a lack of options today but it is my responsibility to
ensure the performance level steps up again. Myself and the players
were very disappointed after the game and we had a long chat which
was very productive.
"On the whole, I am very proud of the players and their attitudes.
They have the application and the drive to learn and come back the
better for these experiences.
"I said from the beginning that we needed people to show some
patience with the team. This season is a very steep learning curve
for all concerned - it is a long-term project."
Turner again fielded three 15 year olds, explaining: "It was my
intention not to have to rely on these boys too much and slowly
integrate them in the team. However, over the last couple of weeks
they have made a full and vital contribution.
"Particular mention goes to Bradley Doyle and Melvyn Ansell.
Bradley was our man of the match. He is very young but his drive and
professionalism are a credit to him and an example to some of the
older players.
"These are the type of players that will ensure a successful future
for the club."
Town were 2-0 down at the break when they were forced to make changes
with Dan Gurr playing in THREE different roles over the 90 minutes.
Ramsgate's superiority was confirmed when they scored a further
four goals after the break but there was a silver lining for Turner's
young guns.
It arrived courtesy of the versatile Gurr who fired Town's first
goal of the season and the best of the game with a 25-yard drive with
the outside of the right foot that slammed into the top corner.
Town's youth team travel to Sheppey United on Sunday looking for
their first win (kick-off 11am)
Town: Allchin, Gurr, Possee, Doyle, Carey, Ansell, Gaskin, Grant,
Lawrence, Oxberry, O'Regan. Subs: Benstead (for Possee), Gould (for
Carey).
