FAVERSHAM TOWN'S youth team are so
determined to make a success of their debut season they have
VOLUNTEERED for extra training.
Ray Turner's kids slumped to their
fourth successive defeat in the Kent Youth League on Sunday morning
when they were hammered by Folkestone.
But youth development officer Turner can
see light at the end of the tunnel thanks largely to the
determination of his fledgling side.
EXTRA, EXTRA .....Town's Dan Gurr and
his team mates have volunteered to undertake extra training sessions
in a bid to kick-start their season.
He revealed: "There are obvious
issues that we need to address, but on a positive note the boys
could see that today offered a genuine opportunity of a positive
result.
"They know what they need to do and
have asked for an extra training session a week to put things
right."
Town went in at half-time full of
confidence that they could turn around a 2-1 deficit.
But their challenge fell apart in the
space of seven crazy minutes at the start of the second half that
saw them concede a further three goals.
Turner said: "The scoreline doesn't
tell the whole story of what was a much closer game.
"If it wasn't for that nightmare spell I feel sure we were
capable of taking our first positive result of the season."
And he added: "The boys were really
up for it at half-time and knew they were causing problems to the
opposition.
"I am very disappointed we gifted
them the game. We have a habit of losing discipline and focus when
we concede and this is something we must put right immediately in
order to stay in matches."
Town went behind in the first five
minutes when a long-range shot spun over Town's goalkeeper Dan
Smith.
But the youngsters responded well and
forced an equaliser direct from a corner taken by Adam Oxberry.
The goal gave Town a lift and they
played some good, confident football before a defensive mistake led
to a Folkestone forward scoring in a one-on-one with Smith.
Town's chances went up in smoke
following that nightmare opening to the second period.
But even at 5-1 down, Town still threatened and the outstanding Sam
Couzins beat two players before hitting a great shot that hit the
inside of a post.
Turner concluded: "There were some
good things out there today. We will work hard during the week ready
for a cup fixture at home to Margate on Sunday.
"Hopefully, it will be the first
time I'll have a full squad of players to choose from."
