September 2005 Faversham
Town 2 Snodland 1
JULIAN BEAL was in no doubt, no one else was claiming the priceless winning
goal and even fewer cared. Faversham Town had their first victory for three
years and that was all that really mattered at Salters Lane on Saturday. There
was an element of doubt about who really
did have the final touch for Town's
winner as the born-again club finally
took all three points for the first
time since 14th September, 2002. But
few would begrudge Faversham Town's
captain and driving force his second
league goal of the season after another
characteristically full-blooded display. To believe
that Beale really did have the final
touch also provides a neat end to one
of the few moments of quality football
on a scrappy afternoon. Town sweeper
Gary Stock sparked the move by having
the presence of mind to find an opponent
with a decent pass rather than simply
punt clear under pressure with eight
minutes to play. His simple
ball forward picked out substitute
Dean Wallington who moved infield before
delivering a great ball over the top
for new boy Rikki Cable to move in
on goal from the left. Cable, who impressed
on debut, sent in a teasing square
pass into the path of the charging
Beal who reached the ball at exactly
the same time as two defenders. Former
Town player Lynden Guscott could well
have had a say in sending the ball
over diving goalkeeper Darryl Broadmore
but it was Beal who gratefully accepted
the congratulations from his team-mates.
The goal completed a comeback that
always looked on the cards following
teenager James Holder's second goal
of the season just after the hour. Tall
centre-half Holder, 19, levelled the
contest with a good, downward header
from the second of two Dave Hockley
corners and Town were on their way.
Yet another good home crowd of 143
looked to be heading for a disappointing
afternoon ten minutes into the second
half. Town conceded a free-kick five
yards from the edge of the box and
Dave Jeal put Snodland ahead with a
quality strike courtesy of his right
foot, giving goalkeeper Tim Holmes
no chance. Town
were the better side in the second
half despite a desperate clearance
off the line from Holder. Giacomino
Vail saw a header fly wide at the other
end and striker John Goodwin was unlucky
to be crowded out after a good square
ball from Beal. Rikki
Cable, who enjoyed a lot of possession
in his first game for the Lilywhites,
then crafted a great chance with a
fine run cutting in from the left.
He picked out Wallington but the impish
forward tried to take the ball round
Broadmore and the keeper pounced. That
was just a few minutes before the decisive
moment of the match and the goal that
secured Faversham's first win since
the 1-0 defeat of Greenwich Borough
in 2002. Just
40 people made up the crowd at Salters
Lane that day and Town were a bit lucky
by all accounts. This time, luck had
nothing to do with it. Just ask Julian
Beal. Town's
