TERRY CORDICE may work as a prison officer but even he must be
running short on "Get Out Of Jail Free" cards.
Faversham Town boss Cordice used the
prison-break analogy more than once after seeing his side come
from behind to see off rugged Snodland on Saturday.
Snodland appeared to have a good goal
disallowed and had midfielder Damien Hodge sent off just after
the hour in a game Town did not look like winning until Kris
Parker's effort four minutes from time.
Cordice knows they are unlikely to
enjoy such good fortune when Premier Division leaders Lewisham
Borough come calling at Salters Lane on Saturday.
It was not all doom and gloom with
man of the match Brad Maguire capping a solid display with his
first goal of the season.
Defender-turned-forward Parker did
likewise with that late winner, but Cordice was left sweating
all the way to the final whistle.
He admitted: "That was a battle
and and i think we got out of jail. I thought they had a good
goal disallowed. The lads were screaming that it was offside
but from where we were standing, it looked a goal.
He looked onside and ran on to
the ball. "The linesman was in a better position than us
so we'll just have to take his word for it!"
The cautions came thick and fast in
the second half and Cordice said: "I thought they were a
very physical side and could have had two or three players
sent off.
"We battled but we didn't play
well. I said to them after the game that we had got lucky, had
got out of jail. We battled hard but never produced our best
football. Some times that is how football goes."
And he added: "The three points
is the only real positive to take out of the game. You can
afford to have one or two to not playing well and still be ok
but for the last two or three weeks we have had four or five
not playing well."
Parker had a great chance to open the
scoring in the first five minutes but could not find a way
past goalkeeper Darryl Broadmore after robbing a defender just
10 yards out.
Town keeper Tim Holmes then made an
excellent save to keep out a well-struck free-kick from
Snodland's most impressive player Matt McHugh.
The first half drew to a close on a
bad note for Town when James Holder was forced off with
recurrence of his hamstring problems to be replaced by Matt
Tallon.
McHugh had another chance which flew
over the bar after the break before two goals in two minutes
lit up what had been a pretty dull affair.
Snodland made the breakthrough when
Gary Stock fouled in the box after a lightning turn by a
forward and McHugh stepped up to score the resultant penalty
with ease.
Town sprang to life and levelled just
seconds later when Broadmore only half cleared a ball in from
Dave Hockley and Maguire sent it back past the keeper on the
turn.
Hodge went for an early shower for a
second bookable offence after pulling back Parker when he was
clean through down the right on 63 minutes.
But Snodland continued to press and
Shaun Mitchell was disappointed to see what looked like a
perfectly good goal chalked off for offside after more good
work from McHugh on 67 minutes.
Kris Browning turned in a
much-improved display at the back and he let fly with an
ambitious 30 yarder that flew over and then a long Scott Price
throw was almost headed into his own net by Lee Reilly.
Substitute Kam Singh had a shot saved
before Town's winner arrived as the game ticked ominously
towards full time.
Gary Stock caused panic in the home
defence with a dangerous ball in from midfield and when Parker
went in to challenge Broadmore, the ball bobbled into the
empty net.
Cordice is looking for a
much-improved display against Lewisham Borough at Salters Lane
on Saturday (kick-off 2.45pm).
He said: "We have to play better
than we did today - get our consistency back and we will do ok
against Lewisham.
"They won again on Saturday
beating Cray 1-0 and let's face it, they are going to be up
for it just as much as us.
"I know we beat them up there
2-1 but I don't know if they will have the same side. We need
to play as a team again. We've not had that the last two
weeks.
"We are only playing in patches
and that is not good enough."
Cordice did not play against Snodland
and would not be drawn on his chances of lining out on
Saturday.
He said: "I have always said
that when everyone is fit I would be back in the dugout and
that's what happened.
"We've done ok with me back
there but like I have said before, my best days are behind me.
However, we will have to see how James Holder is. We'll know
more in the week."
