KAM SINGH was the hero as Faversham
Town rode their luck to secure a first win of 2006.
The Lilywhites broke their New
Year duck thanks to Singh's first goal for the club just before
half-time. But it was a little harsh on Rusthall who bossed the
first half of this British Energy Kent County League clash.
Town were second best in the opening
45 minutes and were thanking their lucky stars when Singh popped up
inside the six-yard box to fire the only goal of the game on 39
minutes. Incredibly, it was Town's solitary attempt on goal during a
woeful first half that saw the corner count read 6-2 in Rusthall's
favour.
It was from the second flag kick that
Singh did the damage, poking the ball home after Dave Hockley's ball
in was flicked on at the near post by John Goodwin. It remains a
mystery what boss Terry Cordice said to his players at half-time but
it certainly did the trick. For Town were much improved after the
break, especially in midfield with skipper Julian Beal and Dave
Hockley finally getting the better of the impressive Rob Perkins and
Alan Chapman.
Beal had a good chance from 25 yards
that flew wide and sent in a cracking ball from the right that was
begging to be buried as Town enjoyed their best spell. He also
played a delightful back heel into Singh only for the striker to
pass up his chance of a double celebration with a right- foot shot
that failed to hit the target.
At the other, end goalkeeper Tim
Holmes pulled off a brilliant diving save to deny Perkins on the
turn. More good news for Town was Lewisham Borough's 1-1 draw with
Stansfield, a result that means Town will go top if they win their
game in hand.
But boss Cordice will be anxious
about the loss of centre-half James Holder with a pulled hamstring
on 13 minutes. He now faces a race against time to be fit for the
big trip to Stansfield in a fortnight. .
