Faversham Town Reserves 2 Whitstable Taverners 0
TWO goals from John Goodwin handed
Faversham Town Reserves the
Canterbury and District Premier Division title on Saturday.
Hitman Goodwin took his tally to
three goals from two games as Town
romped to a convincing victory over Whitstable Taverners at Salters
Lane.
It gave Brett Harrison's
second-string side the silverware by a
single point from rivals The George Hotel after two excellent wins
in just
four days.
The title represents Faversham Town's
first trophy since the club was
re-formed at the start of the season and boss Harrison was
delighted.
He said: "We set about to win
the league and that's what happened
with a style of football that was pleasing."
Harrison was forced to play himself
in goal with regular goalkeeper
Matt Boyce still recovering from an arm injury.
But it was a day when the Town
defence was on top form, restricting
Taverners to just one clear chance when Harrison dealt with a Barry
Knowles shot by catching the ball high above his head.
At the other end, Town went ahead in
the 37th minute when Garry
Roberts delivered a perfectly timed through ball that was fired home
by
first-teamer Goodwin.
The duo combined again on 58 minutes,
Goodwin turning on a sixpence
before finding the net with an excellent finish.
At the final whistle, modest Goodwin
headed for the changing rooms to
allow the Reserves to enjoy their triumph. After a long, hard
season,
they deserved their celebrations.
