The Rose 2 Faversham Town Reserves 1
FAVERSHAM TOWN'S Kent Junior Cup dream wilted and died against The Rose
on Saturday.
Reserve team boss Brett Harrison had high hopes of making the final
with victory against the boys from Maidstone but little went right for
the Lilywhites on a sloping pitch at wind-lashed Penenden Heath.
Top scorer Gary Roberts was unavailable through work commitments for
this eagerly-awaited semi-final and when Tyrone Smith cried off with a
cold on Saturday morning, Town had to take to the field without their
regular strikeforce.
Then they saw The Rose go ahead courtesy of an own goal just before
half time and even though Ray Turner put them level on 47 minutes, The
Rose had the final say with Scott Jones heading home a 70th-minute
winner.
The Rose looked every inch a team that does most of its training in the
pub car park.
But looks can be deceptive and the home side were certainly hungrier
for the ball on a day when many passes from both sides went astray.
With their physical approach and quicker reactions, The Rose were
always favourites to scoop up the loose ball.
Lee Whitehead, skipper Chris Pinks and Lee Pankhurst all had to leave
the pitch for treatment at various stages.
One sensed at times, that Town were not really up for the challenge.
The Rose were and it was no picnic for Town's second string.
The breakthrough came on 44 minutes when a shot took a deflection off
Neil White and flew beyond Matt Boyce in the Faversham goal.
Town hit back straight after the break with Ray Turner crashing home
a cross from Lee Whitehead and the visitors went on to have their best
spell.
But they were cursing their luck when what looked like strong claims
for handball in the area were waived away by the referee and then they
somehow failed to force the ball home in a goalmouth scramble.
Back came The Rose to take control but their aggressive approach led
to a number of warnings and three yellow cards with Town man Turner
also going into the book.
Town's fate was sealed in the 70th minute when Jones headed home
Rose's winner, looping his effort over a stranded Boyce.
Delighted boss Harry Hooper said: "I am very happy. It was a good
game played in a good spirit."
Town star man: Lee Pankhurst - Powerful heading at the back. His best
game yet.
