Chilham 2 - Faversham Town
Reserves 4
Honest players at this point of the season own
up to pre-match nerves.
The Christmas and New Year break is over, and
doubts start to set in.
Are the skills still there? What about my match
fitness? Have I eaten too much recently and lost a yard?
Town were still thinking about it at kick off,
and in the first minute Bennett shot from close range.
Fortunately, Boyce in goal for Town was alert, managed to parry
the shot, and the danger was scrambled away.
Having survived that scare, Town quickly
settled and went into express train mode, with Holbrook bravely
heading home just in front of the advancing keeper on 5
minutes.
Holbrook then proceeded to really get stuck in
with some tigerish defending, linking up with the attack and
perhaps unwisely, wanting to pick an argument with referee Mr
Conlan.
Town by now seemed unstoppable, and in a crazy
3 minutes scored 3 goals. Maguire on 19 minutes, Scott on 20, and
Maguire again on 21. How Brett Harrison must wish his team could
play like this more often.
Chilham, however were in no mood to raise the
white flag, and at last started to gain some possession in
mid-field. Their persistence paid off when a close range header
from James Wake beat Boyce, and with the last kick of the match,
Bennett added the second when Town failed to clear.
It was all too late of course, with the Town
defence playing well to limit the Chilham attack to a few half
chances, and when they were on target, Boyce was there.
Chilham manager Roger Hopkins put the defeat
down to his team's inexcusable "10 minute lapse". For
Brett Harrison however, it was a good day at the office with
another 3 points in the bag, which takes them to the top of the
table.
The other notable feature of the game was Mr
Conlan's pre match instructions to players, substitutes, linesmen
and club officials, conducted in the centre circle.
His announcement of not tolerating any
bad language was met with some bemusement, but to his credit, it
seemed to work and the match was played in a fine spirit. No
bookings, no sending off, hardly any swearing and another win. Not
bad!
