Late own goal sends Town top for first
time this season
Lydd Town 0 Faversham Town 1
FAVERSHAM TOWN are top of the British
Energy Kent County League Premier Division for the first
time.
The born-again club - who were within
weeks of disappearing off football's map altogether in 2003 - now
sit a point clear of title rivals Lewisham Borough at the summit.
And with fellow contenders Stansfield losing 1-0 at Sheerness
East, Town know that they are in pole position to carry off the
championship and promotion at the first time of asking.
So what that Terry Cordice's men took
all three points courtesy of an own goal just two minutes from
time? The Salters Lane club deserve their share of good fortune
after a rollercoaster ride that has seen them go from scrapheap to
salvation and on to soccer success in just a few short
years.
Poor Mark Wellstead was the unluckiest
man on the park, heading home Dave Hockley's cross just a few
minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute. Lydd might
have guessed it was not going to be their day when a 25-yard
right-foot rocket from Dave Williams smashed against a post just
seconds after the re-start.

They had played their part in a fairly
even first half but Town grew stronger as the second-half
progressed and could have spared a few frayed nerves with more
composure in front of goal. Substitute James Holder twice failed
to hit the target with free headers and John Goodwin and Kam Singh
also failed to hit the target when well placed as the game drew
towards that unlikely finale.
There were no such problems at the
other end where Cordice, Adam Hewitson and Kris Browning rarely
looked troubled. Cordice took to the field insisting this was to
be his last game as an emergency sweeper. Faversham Town fans will
be praying that this was not his swansong because the Lilywhites
have never looked stronger at the back.
Gone are the defensive frailties that
haunted the early days of Cordice's reign as manager and the
recent statistics bear this out. Town had kept only three clean
sheets in 17 games before the former Dover Athletic man went from
dugout to the centre of defence. However, Town can now boast of
four successive clean sheets with the club unbeaten in six games,
the last three of which have been clinical 1-0 victories built on
solid defence.
It may not be pretty, but it's pretty
damned effective. Town are top - and long may it continue.
Town's Top Man: Terry Cordice -
Unruffled, uncompromising - can he really be serious about not
playing again?
