Faversham Town's brief flirtation with the F.A.Cup competition came to an end at Hythe's Reachfields stadium as the Lilywhites tasted defeat for the first time in the 2009 / 2010 season.
An excellent advert for Kent League football as both sides battled hard over 90 minutes in a match played in good spirits by both sides.
Faversham started the brighter of the two, Damian Abel being denied by the home keeper in the first five minutes. Against the run of play the home side took an early lead on eleven minutes - Lee Winfield's pass found Pat Kingwell on the right side of play who cut inside before driving the ball low past Rob French in the Town goal.
Former Hythe favourite Buster Smissen had a chance for the visitors on the half hour mark - his well struck effort beating the keeper only to smash against the post, Dave Soutan followed up on the rebound only to see his effort sail over the bar from close range.
As the game progressed chances fell to both sides albeit that neither keeper were put under too much pressure.
At the interval an, uncharacteristically, out of sorts Soutan was replaced by Jack Tanner as the home side chased the game although Hythe though that they had doubled their lead seconds into the second half - Dave Cook's header ruled out for offside.
Kingwell thought that he'd netted for his second of the afternoon on the hour as his effort beat French only to be cleared off the line by Town right-back Jamie Sparks.
Faversham continued persistence paid off after 72 minutes with Dane Luchford's impressive run down the left flank saw him beat his defender before cutting inside to square the ball across the box for Town skipper Tom Hickman to fire home from close range to level the score.
With neither side really dominating a replay was looking the likely outcome before the home side snatched the winner on 83 minutes, Town conceded a needless corner kick being converted by Dave Cook who fired home from the far post to seal cup glory for the home side.
Manager Justin Luchford brought Richard Sinden on immediately after the goal sacrificing his brother to opt for a 4-3-3 formation in the final minutes although to be fair they never really troubled the Hythe defence as the home side were content to wind down the clock at every opportunity.
Despite the obvious setback Town make the same trip again this coming Saturday as they seek immediate revenge this time with 3 points in the league at stake - kick-off is at 15:00.
