Goalkeeper Tim Holmes' return to
first team action in this Kent Premier League Cup fixture, in front
a home crowd of 103, saw him turn in an outstanding performance
helping Faversham Town to their second cup victory over Deal in
eight days.
Both sides started brightly with
Holmes and his counterpart Danny Twyman doing well in the early
encounters.
It was the home side who broke the
deadlock when, on 14 minutes, a long ball from midfield was sent in
for Andy Martin to chase. Martin was second to the ball but luck was
on his side as keeper Twyman cleared the ball only to clip a
defender and send the ball goalwards back into the path of the Town
striker. Running the ball out to the right Martin fired a low
cross into the goalmouth which was met with a fine finish from Steve
Aslett netting his first goal for the Lilywhites.
Town could have doubled their lead
two minutes later when skipper James Holder collected the ball deep
in his own half and embarked on a solo run up the pitch passing
several Deal players in the process, his shot from the edge of the
area was on target but easily taken by the Deal keeper.
Deal continued to look dangerous and
should have made more of a set piece on 20 minutes firing the free
kick into the Salters Lane car park. Minutes later Deal captain Dave
Bathgate slipped his marker and unleashed a shot from the edge of
the box, Tim Holmes' save being more than equal to it.
Andy Martin went close for Town on
the half hour with an attempted acrobatic volley whilst Deal were
unlucky not to end the half on level terms when a 44th minute corner
found it's way into the six-yard box - the close range strike
from Danny Smith denied only by another fine save from Holmes.
The second half started in
controversial fashion when Kris Parker shrugged off the Deal defence
to go clean through with only the keeper to beat; as he lined up his
shot a late tackle appeared to make contact only with Parker's ankle
knocking him off balance. Parker looked up in disbelief as Referee
Robert Baker, yards from the incident, calmly waved play on.
A Julian Beal corner on 52 minutes
helped on by Andy Martin fell to Wes Hammond who made no mistake as
he smashed the ball home to bag his first goal for the team and to
give Town a 2 - 0 lead.
WES HAMMOND.....Fired Town into a
two goal lead.
Adam Hewitson replaced Graham Taylor
on 63 minutes sending in a fine cross from the right with Andy
Martin's header narrowly missing the target.
Deal keeper Twyman came out
unchallenged to collect a loose ball on 70 minutes clearly
controlling the ball with his right hand some 20 yards outside his
box, as before Referee Baker being the only person inside Salters
Lane not to witness the infringement.
His resulting clearance found Dave
Bathgate inside the Town area, a Gary Stock tackle appeared to win
the ball fairly although Mr.Baker had a different opinion of the
incident - the "aggrieved" Bathgate confidently converting
the spot kick.
The unlucky Stock fell foul of the
referee three minutes later when, amidst some confusion, he received
two yellow cards the first for dissent quickly followed by another
for time wasting.
SENT OFF.....Town defender Gary
Stock received his marching orders
Down to ten men and it was all hands
to the pump as Deal pushed hard for the equaliser. Andy Martin made
way for Junior Farrell and Richard Gamble replaced Michael Seager
for the final ten minutes.
Despite their concerted efforts Town
defended well with Tim Holmes saving every effort that came his way.
On a night when another white shirted
team displaying the three Lions came unstuck in Croatia Terry
Cordice's men could hold their heads high following this solid
performance.
