NEW BOY Graham Taylor's 70th-minute winner fired
re-born FavershamTown
to their FIRST victory in a senior cup competition.
Terry Cordice's side were thumped 5-0 by CrayValley
in the first round of last season's Kent Senior Trophy and went
down 4-0 to Eastbourne United in the FA Vase last month.
But hitman Taylor
made it third time lucky for on his full debut as the Lilywhites came
from behind to clinch victory in this Kent League Premier Division
Cup clash.
It was a night of high drama at The Charles
Ground with coach Paul Copley going in goal for the last 18 minutes
after keeper Tony Diment suffered a knee injury. And Town
finished with ten men after defender Jason Mills was taken to
hospital after being knocked unconscious in a sickening second-half
challenge.
Town fell behind after just SIXTY SECONDS
of this Group B encounter when Deal broke down the right and a good
cross into the middle was tucked away by Mark Pollard.
Incredibly, that was how it stayed until a
four-goal blitz in 13 second-half minutes with Andy Martin bagging
his fifth of the season to make it 1-1 just before the hour
following good work from Michael Seager and Taylor.
Two minutes later Jamie Marriott put the home
side in front for a second time but Julian Beal's cute through ball
sprung the offside trap and Mark Smith then made it 2-2 after
romping through to round the keeper.
Town finished strongly and Taylor
capped an improved second-half Town performance when he turned
sweetly on the edge of the six-yard box and smashed home a left-foot
shot.
Cordice, who won just two out of five cup games
last season, was thrilled to see his side hit back after that
nightmare start.
He said: "We expected Deal to put us under
pressure early doors but I was still walking to the dugout when the
first goal went in!
"They had the better of the first 15
minutes but we gradually worked our way back into the game while
lacking that final pass.
"At half-time we told the lads to up their
passing game because they were playing such a high line and we ended
up scoring all three goals that way - passing the ball through them.
"There were some good
performances out there tonight. I thought Graham Taylor looked the
part and took his goal ever so well. It was a proper striker's goal.
"Andy Martin was good too
while Steve Aslett is getting better and better ever week. Having
said that, all the lads did well especially after the break."
Cordice was incensed by the
challenge which ended with Mills taking a trip to the Queen
Elizabeth the Queen
MotherHospital
in Margate
after suffering a blow to the jaw.
Left-wing back Mills was
knocked unconscious and remembered nothing of the match when he came
round in the changing room.
He was kept in overnight for
observation and Cordice said: "It was a very bad
challenge. The ball had gone and it was disappointing to see. It was
a not a dirty game and yet the fella has wiped Jason out."
