FAVERSHAM
TOWN
finally ended their 2007 goal drought against whipping boys Sporting
Bengal
- thanks to the Ox in the box.
Sixteen-year-old Adam
Oxberry was introduced as a substitute at the start of the second half
with the scores locked at 0-0 at the Mile End Stadium.
And he broke the
deadlock with his first goal in senior football, providing the final
touch from six yards after Kris Parker headed on Steve Aslett's
69th-minute corner from the right.
Youth team hitman
Oxberry also played a part in the second goal as Andy Martin scored
from close range five minutes later before making it 3-0 with his
second after stand-in goalkeeper Abdul Khair slipped twice before
falling flat on his face trying to narrow the angle.
Khair took the gloves
after the gloriously eccentric Pape Diagne was forced off with a
concussion he suffered when a right-foot shot from Wayne Farrell
bounced awkwardly before striking him on the nose.
And he was picking
the ball out of the net again six minutes from time following a
fantastic 30-yard strike from substitute Jason Mills to make it 4-0.
Michael Seager
completed the scoring with a goal entirely of his own making four
minutes later, intercepting a Bengal attack before running half the
length of the pitch before finishing in style.
Diagne, whose
flamboyance was a feature of
Bengal
's 3-2 win over Town at
Salters Lane
in October, was the best player on the pitch in a shocking first half
that would have been an embarrassment to Sunday football.
He looked calm and
assured under the high ball and launched a number of
Bengal
attacks including the 24th-minute counter that should have put Premier
Division's basement side ahead.
Diagne rose high to
collect Farrell's cross before finding the halfway line with a throw
that Gary Stock really should have cut out but Town's sweeper slipped
and fell as he rushed in.
The blunder allowed
Saim Uddin the chance to make ground down the right and he sent in a
fabulous cross to the far post where Rashel Rahman had a simple
tap-in.
But the
Bengal
forward somehow managed to scuff his shot wide of the post with Tony
Diment's goal gaping.
The Bangladeshi boys,
who had a real go at Town in the early stages of the second half, had
conceded a whopping 70 goals in their 20 games prior to Town's visit.
And it was no
surprise when their heads dropped after Oxberry's opener and they
collapsed like a pack of cards for the remaining half and hour.
In truth, Town
really should have scored more goals. They will not find opponents so
charitable in their Premier Division Cup quarter-final against
Whistable
Town
on Tuesday night.
Town's Top Man: Andy
Martin - took his goals well
