FAVERSHAM TOWN'S quest for the Kent
County League title will climax away to Sheerness East on Wednesday,
3 May - two days later than originally planned.
Town chief executive John Webb
launched a strenuous appeal after the Lilywhites were told to finish
their season on Monday, 1 May, with the second of two games in three
days.
The May Day encounter also clashed
with a golf day arranged and paid for by the Players' Pool and Webb
is thrilled that common sense has prevailed.
He said: "We were very
disappointed to have been given two games in three days through no
fault of our own and I'd like to thank the County League for their
understanding.
"We now play Sheerness on the
Wednesday night which is far more sensible. It is better for both
teams as far as I can see. We are going for the title and promotion
to the Kent League and after a long, hard season it would've been a
shame to finish like that."
Town's assistant manager Peter Holder
said it was strange that Town were being asked to play twice in
three days when they did not have a game this weekend.
And he added: "We hadn't played
a single game all season on a Monday and never once imagined that we
wouldn't be ok to organise the golf for the Bank Holiday Monday.
"It makes far more sense for the
game to go ahead on the Wednesday night. It now means that all our
four final fixtures are arranged at long last - now we can't wait to
get cracking.
"Ideally, we'd liked to have
played Sheerness East this weekend making Lewisham at home the final
game of the season but there you go. We'll settle for the new
date."
Town - who trail leaders Lewisham
Borough by two points - entertain highly-rated Stansfeld on 15 April
before travelling to local rivals Norton Sports the following
Saturday.
The long-awaited visit of Lewisham to
Salters Lane takes place on Saturday, 29 April, before winding up
their championship challenge against Sheerness East the following
Wednesday.
The race for the Premier Division
crown would appear to be a straight contest between Town and
Lewisham Borough but Sheerness East are also in with an outside
chance.
The Islanders - who still have one
game to be arranged at home to Milton Athletic - are making steady
progress up the table after a slow start which saw them without a
game for the first two weeks of the season.
East still have 12 games to play but
can afford to lose to Town and still go on to claim the title.
Here is the title run-in taking in
