Welcome to the final Sunday Service of an eventful 2007/2008 season at Faversham Town, our second back in the Kent League.
VCD made sure of finishing runners-up for the second successive year as they beat Sevenoaks 3-1 at home. Jack Parkinson, Richard Sinden and Gary Ward were the Vickers scorers, with Andy Constable netting a late consolation for the Oaks.
Beckenham’s goal-less draw at Lordswood was enough to ensure third place, and with Hythe already assured of at least a fourth place finish their 2-0 defeat at home to Tunbridge Wells had little effect on the final table. Sam Phillips and Joe Fuller were the Wells scorers.
Champions Thamesmead Town finished the season with a 2-1 win at Greenwich Borough thanks to a Richard Dimmock penalty and a second half Junior Baker strike. Peter Smith hit the home side’s consolation in the last minute.
Our local rivals Herne Bay finish the season in sixth spot after beating Holmesdale 3-1. Ben Brown put Bay one up just before the break but Ricky Hardy equalised soon after the restart. Goals from Rob Lawrence and Rhys Lawson made sure of the points.
Erith Town and Erith and Belvedere drew their local derby 1-1. Aiden Purseglove put the Deres in front on 35 minutes and Billy Edwards equalised seven minutes from time.
Elsewhere Croydon beat Slade Green 3-0 with goals from Ben Yiadom, Danny Mills and Ollie Young.
The First Team have finished 13th in the Premier Division, a drop of one place on last season. With 25 points picked up since Christmas when we were rooted firmly to the bottom on just six points and battling performances against the top teams this is all very encouraging for next season. I’m sure that if Justin and Jimmy can keep most of this season’s squad and with a couple of additions we will be pressing for silverware next season.
With one game left the Reserves are assured of at least a ninth place finish. Due to work commitments Kevin Sims has reluctantly had to stand down as Reserve Team Manager and I would like to thank him personally for his work this season in probably the most difficult job in the Club. I’m sure his successors will carry on the good work of bringing through and encouraging the U18 players and it was great to see three of them on the bench for the First Team yesterday.
Well that’s it again. Not just for this week but for the season. Where does the time go? It isn’t the last football involving Faversham Town or Salters Lane yet though as the Reserves travel to high-flying Tunbridge Wells on Saturday for the last game of the season.
On Tuesday 29th April we are hosting the play-off of the Kent Soccer Company Floodlight Trophy between Chatham Town and Deal Town, kick off 7.45, and then on Tuesday 6th May we host the Les Leckie Cup Final between AFC Sheppey and Bly Spartans, kick off 7.30.
Have a great summer and don’t forget to keep up to date with the news about Faversham Town F.C. on this website. See you all in August when the fun begins again.
