No doubt about the match of the day in the Kent League this weekend as table-toppers VCD Athletic entertained second placed Thamesmead Town. The visitors took the points, coming from behind to win 2-1 and close the gap to just two points.
Leroy Huggins gave the home side the lead with a 19th minute penalty but second half goals from Bingi Grant and Richard Dimmock were enough to seal the points.
Greenwich Borough held fifth placed Erith Town to a 1-1 draw at home. Lewis Ambrose opened the scoring for Borough midway through the first half but Danny Twinn equalised with nine minutes left.
Slade Green bounced back from their defeat at our hands last week to win 2-0 at Herne Bay thanks to a brace from Chris Johnson. Lordswood handed our next opponents Croydon their fifth successive league defeat at North Dane Way with a 4-2 win. Matt Knuckey put the Surrey side in front on the half hour, but second half goals from Adam Douglas, Darren Martin and Lewis Farrell gave the home side a commanding lead before Izdin Harlish pulled one back in the 87th minute. Lee Farrell wrapped up the points with his second and Lordswood’s fourth in the last minute.
A 33rd minute strike from former Whitstable striker Andy Constable was all that separated Seveonaks and Erith and Belvedere at Greatness Park, while the game at Tunbridge Wells was postponed due to waterlogging.
These results and our 3-1 defeat to Hythe leave us in thirteenth place, level on 15 points with Slade Green and Sporting Bengal but ahead on goal difference. Lordswood are now three points ahead with a game in hand and there is then a seven point gap to Croydon in eleventh.
In Division 2 there were wins for Greenwich Borough, Deal and Hythe, while runaway leaders Dover’s game at home to Lordswood was postponed. The Reserves have now slipped to ninth, coincidentally also on 15 points.
Well, that’s it for another week. As I said above, the First Team make the trek across the border into Surrey to visit Croydon next Saturday, while the Reserves entertain Croydon Reserves at Salters Lane. Let’s hope we can inflict a sixth successive defeat on them.
