The heavy rain during the week led to a number of postponements which saw a restricted Kent League programme this weekend. All the games in Division 2 were postponed, as was VCD’s FA Vase clash with Needham Market and the Premier Division games at Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells.
Of the games that were played first mention must be to Greenwich Borough who are through to the last 16 of the FA Vase thanks to a 2-1 win at home to Harefield Utd. Sonner put the visitors in front on 37 minutes but Joseph Agoo equalised seven minutes after the break. With extra time beckoning Badur Mohammed hit the winner with just two minutes remaining.
With leaders VCD not playing the teams leading the chase all took full advantage to record wins and reduce the gap at the top.
Second placed Beckenham came from a goal down to beat Herne Bay at Eden Park Avenue 2-1. Aaron Firth gave the visitors the half time lead with his 22nd goal of the season in the 16th minute, but second half strikes by Martin Bugden and Tom Youle took the points for the home side.
Thamesmead, in third, recorded their fourth away win of the season with a 1-0 victory at Croydon thanks to a 75th minute Scott Mulholland goal.
Fourth placed Hythe recorded the biggest win of the day with a 7-1 win at home to Slade Green, who we face at The Small Glen next Saturday. Pat Kingswell, Buster Smissen (2), Dale Skelton, James Gregory, former Town target Marcus Hodges and an own goal by Sam Taylor were the Hythe scorers, while Javelle Stuart bagged the Green consolation.
The only other game in the Premier Division saw Deal emerge with a 3-1 win from their visit to Erith and Belvedere. Roy Godden put the seasiders in front on 10 minutes but Lee Benavente equalised just after the half hour to make it 1-1 at half time. Further goals by Mark Pollard and Danny Smith took the points for the visitors as they also secured their fourth away win of the season.
Well, that’s it for another week, a week which has seen us secure our second consecutive win, a feat last achieved in September 2006 with the defeats of Lordswood and Thamesmead. Let’s hope that we can keep the run going with a third win at Slade Green on Saturday, but for those of you not making the trip to North Kent the Reserves host high-flying Tunbridge Wells in what is sure to be a stern test for Kevin Sims’ boys.
